Cultivate London Fundraising Evening with La Trompette – a Huge Success!

On Tuesday, 20th June, the Salopian Garden was graced with the presence of over 100 wonderful guests, as well as an amazing team from Michelin Star restaurant La Trompette, as we celebrated the summer solstice in style. The canapé and cocktail evening, which featured produce from the garden, prepared by Chef Rob Weston and the La Trompette team, was held in order to raise funds or Cultivate London’s youth and community training programmes. Raise funds it did, to the tune of £6,500, and we cannot thank everyone enough.

The evening also saw the launch of the “Friends of Cultivate London” programme, which, if you missed it on Tuesday, fear not, is available all year round. More information will be posted soon about you can help in supporting young people, improving the local environment, and also bagging over £200 of seasonal Cultivate London goodies.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support us on the evening, and to La Trompette for rustling up some amazing food. Thank you also to the Milford Arms pub (Isleworth) who did an ace job running the bar. We are grateful to you all!

Congratulations are in order!

Cultivate London’s Senior Apprentice, Darrell Bennett, has just clinched a coveted Apprenticeship position at Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, one of the world’s leading botanical gardens, and we couldn’t be more proud of him!

He joined us in the spring of 2014, after participating in Ealing Council’s Pathways programme, and has since completed a both Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture (delivered in partnership with Capel Manor College).

While at Cultivate London he has been instrumental in helping run our plant nursery, and took the lead on a major site move in the winter of 2015/16.  He is a talented grower as well as a skilled builder, and we are fortunate to have had him as a member of our team for the past three years.

He will start three years of training in botanical horticulture at Kew in August, and we wish him the best of luck!

Spring is here, so now’s the time to get to know the green spaces around you.

The following infographic from UKS Mobility shows the many benefits to be gained from gardening.

If you don’t have access to a garden or green space, why not visit the Salopian Garden, our community kitchen garden in Hounslow? We welcome volunteers on Wednesdays, from 1 til 4pm and Thursdays, from 10am til 3pm, and host a number of events and workshops as well.

If you live in and around Hanwell, two of our apprentices are working on a project to Green Hanwell, as a part of the Hanwell Big Local Project, and are always looking for volunteers…

Every week in the office, one of our Apprentices chooses an interesting plant to tell us about.

This week’s Plant of the Week, comes courtesy of Francis, one of our Landscape Gardening Apprentices…

Kudzu is a perennial vine native to Asia, primarily subtropical and temperate regions of China, Japan, and Korea. Five species in the genus Pueraria (P. montana, P. lobata, P. edulis, P. phaseoloides and P. thomsoni) are closely related and kudzu populations in the United States seem to be hybrids of more than one species.

Although kudzu prefers direct sunlight, the plant can survive in partial shade. These attributes made it attractive as an ornamental plant, but kudzu became a “structural parasite” of the Southern US, enveloping entire structures, growing rapidly over trees and shrubs killing them with heavy shading.

It has been spreading in the southern U.S. at the rate of 610 km2 annually, easily outpacing the use of herbicide spraying and mowing, as well increasing the costs of these controls by $6 million annually. This destructive habit has earned Kudzu the name “the vine that ate the south”.

Kudzu spreads by vegetative reproduction via stolons that root at the nodes to form new plants and by rhizomes. Kudzu will also spread by seeds, which are contained in pods and mature in the autumn. One or two viable seeds are produced per cluster of pods. The hard-coated seeds can remain viable for several years, and will successfully germinate only when soil is persistently soggy for five to seven days, with temperatures above 20 °C. Once germinated, saplings must be kept in a well-drained medium that retains high moisture. During this stage of growth, it is critical for kudzu to receive as much sunlight as possible. Kudzu saplings are sensitive to mechanical disturbance, and are damaged by chemical fertilizers. They do not tolerate long periods of shade, or high water tables.
